(Battery Energy Storage Systems)
BESS are Energy Storage Systems, made from chemical batteries, designed to withstand numerous charge / discharge cycles. The need to accumulate energy comes from the ever-increasing usage of FER-NP (Source of Renewable Energy - Non-Programmable) such as solar, photovoltaic and wind, where it is not possible to manage the production of electricity due to environmental conditions. This type of production is called “intermittent” (at night, cloudy days, little wind). Flash SpA is currently developing with Redelfi SpA, 2.8 GW BESS in Italy through its subsidiary Bright Storage S.p.A. A FLASH S.p.A. is currently developing, with Redelfi S.p.A., 2.8 GW BESS in Italy through the company Bright Storage S.p.A.
Further information
The increase in energy production from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is regulated by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC). In order to achieve the set objectives of this plan, it will be necessary to accumulate as much renewable energy as possible with the dedicated facilities. Storing energy produced on site, allows to develop larger production capacity than would otherwise be needed for self-consumption. BESS systems can be very useful for network management: by communicating with the distributors’ systems, they can accumulate energy by taking it from the network when it has an excess and releasing it in moments of maximum demand.
This will lead to an improvement in network performance, increasing its reactivity and reliability. BESS systems will become an integral part of the national energy strategy, contributing to the security, stability and power of the electricity grid. For this reason, dedicated BESS systems may also be set up for this purpose alone. A better management of networks will lead to a significant reduction in the use of fossil fuels with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).
